An Ultrasound Based Instrument Generating Audible and Tactile Sound

چکیده
This paper, describes the second phase of an ongoing research project dealing with the implementation of an interactive interface. It is a “hands free” instrument, utilizing a non-contact tactile feedback method based on airborne ultrasound. The three main elements/components of the interface that will be discussed in this paper are: 1. Generation of audible sound by self-demodulation of an ultrasound signal during its propagation through air; 2. The condensation of the ultrasound energy in one spatial point generating a precise tactile reproduction of the audible sound; and 3. The feed-forward method enabling a real-time intervention of the musician, by shaping the tactile (ultra)sound directly with his hands.

Generating and Focusing the Ultrasound Waves Using Elastomer-based Capacitive Micro-Speakers
Ultrasound wave is a kind of waves with the frequency higher than the human audible frequency. Although ultrasound was first used for military identification purposes, it has been used for decades for various other applications, especially medical applications. Medical applications of ultrasound include diagnostic and therapeutic applications, such as for the treatment of cancer. In this paper,...
متن کاملEffect of sound classification by neural networks in the recognition of human hearing
In this paper, we focus on two basic issues: (a) the classification of sound by neural networks based on frequency and sound intensity parameters (b) evaluating the health of different human ears as compared to of those a healthy person. Sound classification by a specific feed forward neural network with two inputs as frequency and sound intensity and two hidden layers is proposed. This process...
متن کاملModulation and Demodulation of Steerable Ultrasound Beams for Audio Transmission and Rendering Templates for Dafx-08, Finland, France
Nonlinear effects in ultrasound propagation can be used for generating highly directive audible sound. In order to do so, we can modulate the amplitude of the audio signal and send it to an ultrasound transducer. When played back at a sufficiently high sound pressure level, due to a nonlinear behavior of the medium, the ultrasonic signal gets self-demodulated. The resulting signal has two impor...

متن کاملBack to the Programme A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IN MEMS
In this work we describe a MEMS instrument that resonates at audible frequencies, and with which music can be made. The sounds are generated by mechanical resonators and capacitive displacement sensors. Damping by air scales unfavourably for generating audible frequencies with small devices. Therefore a vacuum of 1.5 mbar is used to increase the quality factor and consequently the duration of t...
